“A good groove releases adrenaline in your body. You feel uplifted, you feel centered, you feel calm, you feel powerful. You feel that energy. That’s what good drumming is all about.” – Mickey Hart

From the beginning of time, drums and their rhythms have been at the core of social and cultural gatherings around the world. They play an essential role in rituals and ceremonies and serve purposes of self-expression and communications. Within the Native American culture, the drum is both profound and sacred, as it is believed that the drum beat is in sync with the heartbeat of mother earth.

In fact, we were first introduced to percussion and rhythms before we ever greeted the world —- through the maternal heartbeat, when we were still developing and forming our subconscious. Woven into our creation story, our sense of rhythm is truly innate. As life unfolds, many of us derail from this musical path, so learning rhythms is in many ways, an art of rediscovery. At Music Studio 78, it is our mission and joy to help you relocate this gift.

It is no wonder that music therapists and therapy programs often employ drums and rhythm to induce and accelerate spiritual and physical healing, as drumming boosts the immune system and feelings of well-being through the production of endorphins. Recent studies have demonstrated that drumming induces deep relaxation, lowers blood pressure, is an effective treatment for stress, fatigue and anxiety. The sounds of drumming generates neuronal connections in all parts of the brain, even where there is significant damage or impairment.

Musically, from Bach to the Beatles, no genre of music would be the same without its ever-evolving rhythm section. The energy and excitement that the drums offer are unparalleled. But perhaps most importantly of all, drummers are the true time-keepers, and that is a significant role to play.
